More signs pointing to Sprint XOHM Spinoff?

There were speculations about what Sprint may do with XOHM and the rumors that it may spinoff the WiMax unit. Sprint announced today that it is backing out of the venture with ClearWire to rollout a nationwide WiMax network. Here is the link Sprint, ClearWire cancel WiMAX venture.

ClearWire CEO, Ben Wolff was quoted as saying

“We need to be free to pursue other strategic opportunities.”

This is a little surprising to me that ClearWire said this and not Sprint.

Is there a JV of Sprint and other non-traditional players, Google, in the works for WiMax?

Getting rid of some exiting contracts and projects is also not so uncommon before a M&A, spin-off, split-off or sale of certain assets. Other question that does arise is whether Sprint itself is a target of acquisition or is considering merger with another service provider?

WiMax offers a viable alternative to other 4G technologies like LTE (Long Term Evolution), I hope the options available to subscribers are not crippled in the current economic turmoil Sprint is facing with its subscriber churn rate.
